Financial Assistance for Adoption
Several financial assistance programs are available to help you cover the cost of adoption.
Washington State Adoption Support
If your family adopts a child from foster care, the State of Washington may reimburse you for up to $1,500 of one-time adoption expenses per adopted child. In addition, the child may be eligible for financial support, such as enrollment in the State’s Medicaid program.
Adoption Tax Credit
Your family may benefit from the federal Adoption Tax Credit, which is available to help adoptive families recover their adoption costs. For 2008, the maximum adoption credit was $11,650 and this amount is expected to rise in 2009.
Military Adoption Subsidy
Active duty military families can receive reimbursement up to $2,000 for adoption costs. Please check with your military branch for more information.
