Events and Communications Intern

Position Summary

Amara is seeking an Events and Communications Intern for the 2010–2011 school year and beyond. This is a paid internship, approximately 10–15 hours per week. We are flexible on the days of the week but prefer a minimum time commitment of 2 days per week. There are occasional evening and weekend shifts surrounding outreach events.

The ideal candidate will stay engaged in Amara’s work and continue the internship in years to come. Applicants must be currently enrolled in an educational degree program and show a demonstrated interest in events, marketing, public relations, fundraising and/or non-profit management. Students eligible for work study are encouraged to apply.

The Events and Communications Intern reports to the Development Coordinator and is responsible for assisting with the planning and implementation of Amara fundraising events and communications. The ideal candidate is a self-starter; enjoys interacting with people; and is comfortable managing multiple priorities. Position is open until filled. Decision-making will be ongoing.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist with coordinating and facilitating events.
  • Support mailings. Coordinate communications, including the creation and distribution of appeal letters, e-newsletters and other publications. Assist with writing and editing as needed.
  • Provide administrative and organizational support such as filing, tracking and recording gifts and communications. Maintain inventory of outreach materials.
  • Support the maintenance of a strong donor database, including processing gifts and updating records.
  • Provide support for the Development department and agency volunteers as needed. Participate as a member of the administrative team.
  • Research avenues for increasing social media opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Resourceful, flexible, positive and good humored
  • Interest in special events, from planning to execution
  • Comfortable performing research, preparing concise summaries and producing reports
  • Ability to meet deadlines, attention to detail
  • Computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office software and social media tools such as Facebook, Wordpress, Twitter, YouTube, etc.
  • Knowledge of and ability to navigate related blogs and online information sources
  • Ability to work independently while keeping staff updated
  • Comfort working with a broad range of people
  • Commitment to and enthusiasm for Amara’s mission and values

 

Salary and Benefits

This is a paid internship, approximately 10–15 hours per week. This position is eligible for work study and is open until filled.
